When Disconnection Becomes the Most Powerful Connection
October 13, 2025 – From the Romanian Parliament to the WiFi-free lake: the perfect digital paradox
Monday morning started unusually for our project beneficiaries. After three intense days of exploring the digital world, day 4 promised something completely different: a visit to the Romanian Parliament followed by… no technology. Zero. Nada. „Today we’re doing the most important digital exercise: learning when to stop,” announced Andreea as the bus headed toward the Palace of Parliament.

At the heart of democracy: when digitalization meets legislation
The Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, the second largest administrative building in the world, welcomed participants with its overwhelming magnificence. But this visit wasn’t about architecture – it was about the connection between technology, democracy and active citizenship.
„Welcome!” greeted the official guide. „Today you will see where decisions that affect your digital life are made.”
Digital legislation: from theory to reality
In the Parliament’s Conference Hall, participants took part in a special session about Romanian and European digital legislation, facilitated by an expert in digital public policies.

What participants discovered:
- GDPR was negotiated for years in the European Parliament
- Each EU member state, including Romania, contributed to the final form
- Digital legislation doesn’t appear out of nowhere – it’s the result of political struggles, lobbying, and compromises
- Young people can influence these laws through voting, petitions, and civic activism
„Romania is in the EU’s top 5 for internet speed, but in the bottom 10 for the population’s digital skills,” the guide explained. „Projects like yours are essential to close this gap.”
Participants were visibly moved to hear that their work matters at the national level.
The classic tour: history and magnificence
After the digital session, participants had the classic Palace tour:
- The Union Hall with giant chandeliers
- Huge Romanian carpets
- The balcony where world leaders have stood
- The impressive Ceaușescu-era architecture
Preparing for the impossible: the day without technology
On the way to CCSS Tei, after lunch, the facilitators made the announcement:
„For the next 3 hours, all phones, laptops, and smartwatches will be safely stored. You will not touch them. You will not check notifications. You will live… analog.”
Immediate reactions:
- „WHAT?! But I need to reply to an important email!” – panic
- „But how do we take photos?” – confusion
- „But… but… what do we do without phones?!” – most people
- „Finally! I was waiting for this!” – only 2 people
„Exactly,” smiled Andreea. „This is the experiment. In the last 3 days I taught you about technology. Today I’m teaching you about life.”
The facilitators collected the devices in sealed boxes. Some participants looked like they were leaving their children at daycare for the first time.
„It’s only for 3 hours,” Nicoleta assured them. „You will survive. Promise.”
Reconnect to reality: activities without pixels
By the lake at CCSS Tei, without any electronic devices, participants began their most unusual afternoon.
Activity 1: „Me vs. My Grandfather” Debate
It was a physical (not digital!) debate about the advantages and disadvantages of technology from generational perspectives.
Half the group received the role „Modern youth – Pro technology”, the other half: „Grandparents’ generation – Digital skeptics”
The „youth” arguments: „You don’t understand! Technology connects us with the whole world!” „We can learn anything, anytime, for free on YouTube!” „Future jobs require digital skills!”
The „grandparents” arguments: „But you’ve forgotten how to talk face to face!” „All you do is stare at screens. Where is real life?” „In our time, friendships were real, not ‘likes’!”
Activity 2: Analog Communication Challenge
We divided the group into teams of 4 and gave them tasks that would usually be done digitally:
Task 1: Create an „Instagram post” using only paper, colored pencils, and posters. Result? Pure art! No filters, no edit, no delete. Raw creativity.
Task 2: Organize a physical „Trello board” for an imaginary project: Colored post-its, markers, and large cardboard.
Task 3: Do „time management” for a perfect day – on paper. No apps, just pencil and paper.
Activity 3: Nature Walk & Mindfulness
The facilitators led the group on a quiet walk around the lake. No phones. No photos. No distractions.
„Just observe. The colors. The sounds. The sensations. Be present.”
Activity 4: Storytelling Circle – Face to Face
In a circle, participants shared stories from their lives. Not through text. Not through emojis. Face to face. Eye to eye. Each participant shared. Without judgment. With vulnerability. With truth.
Reflections: The lesson of balance
The reflection session was profoundly transformative.
„Complete the following sentence,” Andreea asked. „After today without technology, I realized that…”
Answers that made the room go silent:
„…I’m not dependent on technology, I’m dependent on the validation I receive through it.” – Maksym
„…face-to-face conversations are 100 times more satisfying than messages.” – Eliza
„…nature exists. And it’s beautiful. And it doesn’t need to be put on Instagram to be real.” – Sofiia
„…I can survive without a phone. And I don’t just survive – I LIVE more intensely.” – Rareș
„…technology is a wonderful instrument when I control it. It’s a prison when it controls me.” – Francesca
„…I want to implement regular ‘technology-free days’ at home.” – Sebastian
Intercultural evening: When diversity becomes celebration
After dinner, the conference room at CCSS Tei transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds and aromas. Traditional music, folk dances, stories, snacks.
Future Skills: Digital for Life continues with a perfect balance between digital and analog until October 16, 2025.
